Our Courses

FNEL offers courses in First Nations languages, as well as methodology classes on language documentation, conservation and revitalization. In partnership and collaboration with First Nations and Indigenous communities and their cultural institutions, staff, scholars and students in our program conduct research with speakers of endangered languages and help to develop educational materials in British Columbia and beyond.

UBC Hosts BC Breath of Life Archival Institute for First Nations Languages The inaugural BC Breath of Life Archival Institute for First Nations Languages was held at UBC from May 14-20, under the Directorship of Patricia A. Shaw and Organizing Committee members Jorge Emilio Rosés Labrada and Daisy Rosenblum, in close collaboration with Advisory Board members Elder Larry Grant, Jill Campbell, Marny Point, Vanessa Campbell, and Grace Point from the Musqueam Indian Band Language and Culture Department.
FNEL Celebrates 20 years of MIB-UBC FNLG/FNEL Partnership As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, our annual term-end potluck with the hən̓q̓əmin̓əm̓ language classes at the Musqueam Community Centre included some special performances and tributes.
FNEL and MIB Teams Participate in the ICLDC Conference in Honolulu Our FNEL faculty along with colleagues from the Musqueam Lan guage and Culture Department had a wonderful experience at the 5th International Conference on Language Documentation and Conservation (ICLDC) from March 2-5, 2017 at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa.
Come celebrate 20 years of MIB-UBC FNLG/FNEL partnership with us! As part of our 20th anniversary celebrations, we invite you to join us at our end-of-term community potluck dinner.
